As the coronavirus pandemic continues, alcohol sales are soaring at wine shops and through digital retailers and, why not? The entire world is up in shambles, everyone is stuck at home, bars are closed down, and social distancing is keeping friends and family members apart. The truth is, most of us are not used to working from home or staying indoors for a long period of time, so the least you can do is treat yourself to a nice cocktail. Here are five easy recipes to make while stuck at home:
The great thing about a Martini is that there are so many different ways to make it, and different liquors can be used; those being Gin or Vodka. Here is a fairly simple take on the Gin Martini.
INGREDIENTS: 2-3 oz Gin, ½ oz dry vermouth, 1 dash orange bitter, garnish with 1-3 olives
The Moscow Mule is a go-to classic cocktail recipe with an interesting story on its creation. This is another drink with different variations in liquors that can be used, but the most commonly known, classic Moscow Mule uses Vodka as its base. It’s very important that when drinking a Moscow Mule, you do so using a Copper Mug. Don’t ask why!
INGREDIENTS: 2 oz Vodka, 3-4 oz ginger beer, 2 lime wedges, optional: a slice of ginger root
The whiskey-based Manhattan is one of five cocktails named after a New York City borough. The Manhattan was the most famous cocktail in the world shortly after it was invented in New York City’s Manhattan Club, sometime around the 1870s.
INGREDIENTS: 2 oz Whiskey or Whiskey Rye, 1 oz sweet vermouth, two dashes of bitters, One dash orange bitters, garnish with a brandied cherry.
The whiskey sour is a mixed drink containing Whiskey (often Bourbon), lemon juice, and simple syrup or sugar. The first printed record of the Whiskey Sour appears in 1862 in Jerry Thomas’ How to Mix Drinks, though the recipe likely dates back many years earlier.
INGREDIENTS: 2oz Bourbon Whiskey, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, 3/4 oz simple syrup, garnish with lime peel
A Bloody Mary is a cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and flavorful spices including Worcestershire sauce, hot sauces, garlic, pepper, herbs, celery, and more. This drink comes in so many variations and has become a popular, nutritional-breakfast item that doubles as a great hangover cure. If you’re not up for making your own tomato juice mix, opt-in for a pre-mix favorite like McClures.
INGREDIENTS: 2-3 oz Vodka, 4 oz tomato juice, ½ oz Worcestershire sauce, ground pepper, salt, garnish with a lime wedge and your favorite pickled vegetable.
