How To Wash Linen | Gentleman’s Guide

Linen is the go-to fabric for summer. With it’s breathable, yet sturdy makeup, it’s the perfect material to wear on hot and humid days. Here are some easy ways to make sure you properly take care and how to wash linen clothing.

Gentle is key.

When and if you wash your linen materials in a washing machine, always put them on the gentle cycle and in lukewarm water. If you put your pieces in a rough cycle, it will damage the threads of the linen and the structure.

If you do need to wash your linen pieces in a washing machine, make sure you only put them with other linens that are of the same color and similar weight. With like any other piece of clothing, colors will run and materials will stick to others.

The best way to take care of your linen clothing is by hand washing your pieces. If you have a smaller article of clothing with a stain on it, apply a small amount of water to the stain and only use swirling motions to loosen the stain. Look into a stain remover pen or take your linen to the dry cleaners for a deep clean.

You never want to dry your linen fully. Place your items in the dryer on low heat and tumble dry. Once it is only slightly damp, pull your pieces out, lay them flat, and let them air dry the rest of the way.
